Our Ixion Research and Tech Tree will tell you how Research works, how to get Science, and how to unlock more items on the Tech Tree!

Ixion Research works in a similar fashion to many other games -- you have to collect a Research-specific resource, and then you spend that resource on unlocking new items in the Tech Tree. In the case of Ixion, that resource is "Science." N08825 Capillary Tubing

When you start a new game of Ixion, a few items will be automatically unlocked on the Tech Tree. Subsequent items can only be unlocked by spending Science on them, and later Tiers of the Tech Tree can only be opened after you've completely opened up the previous Tier. Most of the Tech Tree's core icons are used to unlock new Buildings.

Nearly every icon on the Tech Tree has "sub-Techs" which improve the base item. For example, the Docking Bay can be improved with the "Parts of Stanford" Tech which increases the speed of loading and unloading of resources by 10%.

Aside from the Science cost, each item you Research also requires a certain amount of time (measured in "Cycles"). This, too, can be sped up by Researching sub-Techs on the Tech Lab's icon in the Tech Tree.

There are two ways to get more Science in Ixion:

Upgrading the Tech Lab as soon as you reasonably can allows you to generate much more Science over the long term, so consider investing in it early.

You can unlock more Research in the Ixion Tech Tree by completely Researching everything in the current Tier. Tier 2 will open when you've Researched all of the core items in Tier 1, Tier 3 will open when you've Researched all of the core items in Tier 2, and so on.

That aside, it should be noted that a few items in the Tech Tree can only be unlocked by progressing through the story or by making certain choices at Points of Interest. For example, the Outer Hope Black Box is a special Research item that activates after you explore Outer Hope in Chapter 1.
